A limit characterization of belief-free equilibrium payoffs in repeated games

چکیده

The present paper provides a limit characterization of the payoff set supported by belief-free equilibria in repeated games with private monitoring, as the discount factor approaches one and the noise on private information vanishes. Contrary to the conjecture by Ely, Hörner, and Olszewski (2005), in many of the three-or-more player games, the payoff set is given by a union of product sets, as in two-player games. As an application of this result, the folk theorem is proved in N-player prisoner’s dilemma games. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Numbers: C72, C73, D82.

Belief-free equilibria in games with incomplete information: Characterization and existence

We characterize belief-free equilibria in infinitely repeated games with incomplete information with N ≥ 2 players and arbitrary information structures. This characterization involves a new type of individual rational constraint linking the lowest equilibrium payoffs across players. The characterization is tight: we define a set of payoffs that contains all the belief-free equilibrium payoffs; ...

Belief-free equilibria in games with incomplete information: the N -player case

We characterize belief-free equilibria in infinitely repeated games with incomplete information with an arbitrary number of players and arbitrary information structures. This generalizes Hörner and Lovo (2008), which restrict attention to the two-player case and to information structures that have a product structure. Our characterization requires introducing a new type of individual rational c...

Repeated games with incomplete information and discounting

We analyze discounted repeated games with incomplete information, such that the players’ payoffs depend only on their own type (known-own payoff case). We describe an algorithm for finding all equilibrium payoffs in games for which there exists an open set of belief-free equilibria of Hörner and Lovo (2009). This includes generic games with one-sided incomplete information and a large and impor...

Belief-free Equilibria in Repeated Games∗

We introduce a class of strategies which generalizes examples constructed in two-player games under imperfect private monitoring. A sequential equilibrium is belief-free if, after every private history, each player’s continuation strategy is optimal independently of his belief about his opponents’ private histories. We provide a simple and sharp characterization of equililibrium payoffs using t...
